Classic luminaires from Tapio Wirkkala’s K2 range were selected as the lighting solution for the area of gates 45–47 on Helsinki Airport’s new West Pier. The joint waiting area makes a spectacular and inviting lounge for travellers. The elegant pendant luminaires tie together the areas furnished with modern sofa groups.
Artist and designer Tapio Wirkkala (1915–1985) was an iconic figure in Finnish industrial design, whose works captivated audiences in the 1950s and 1960s, creating a foundation for the international success of Finnish design. With its clean-lined, elegant bulb made of opal glass and a simple, black lighting cable, the WIR lighting fixture, designed by Wirkkala for Airam, was an award-winning innovation. Wirkkala was awarded the Grand Prix at the Milan XII Triennale in 1960 for the WIR bulb. After this, he designed an entire range of luminaires around the bulb.
Three elegant luminaires from the iconic K2 range were selected for the airport’s new waiting area. The feature that these luminaires have in common is the beautiful hand-crafted glass diffuser that showcases the shape of the WIR bulb and creates soft illumination. Airam offers the classic WIR lamps with LED technology.
The elegant K-140 luminaire consists of a dimmable WIR-105 LED bulb and a brushed steel sleeve. The hourglass-shaped, coloured-glass diffuser of the K2-135 pendant luminaire highlights the shape of the WIR-85 bulb. This feature is shared by the diffuser of the K2-142 luminaire, which perfectly complements the design of the bulb. Both luminaires are available with a clear or coloured diffuser. The colour options are smoke blue, green-grey and sand. The package includes the WIR bulb, metal sleeve, cable, baldachin and installation accessories.
