In the run-up to Christmas, many candles, fireplaces, ovens and electrical devices are burned in homes, so it’s worth remembering safety. Before Christmas, more cooking than usual is done in homes and unfortunately accidents do occur. Keep a fire blanket handy. In a beautiful bag, it is fit for the wall even of the most demanding interior decorators.
A smoke alarm is not only compulsory, but is also cheap life insurance. It looks after your safety day and night at quite a small cost. The law requires residents themselves to ensure that their dwelling has enough working smoke alarms: on every floor there must be at least one for each starting area of 60 m². A smoke alarm notices when a fire starts, and emits a loud noise to alert people. It is especially important to install smoke alarms in bedrooms and exit routes.
Check regularly (once a month) that your alarm is in working condition. Change the battery once a year, or check that longer-life batteries are working. The first batteries come with the smoke alarm. There is also a specified time limit for checking that smoke alarms themselves are in working order. The service life for an Airam smoke alarm is eight years from the date of manufacture. This is marked on the packet and on the alarm’s mounting disc.
Carbon monoxide is an insidious gas that humans cannot detect by their senses. It is odourless, tasteless, colourless, a little lighter than air and is also extremely inflammable and toxic. Carbon monoxide detectors warn people about the presence of the gas in rooms. They do not warn about other kinds of smoke or gases, so they are not a substitute for a smoke alarm. The Airam carbon monoxide detector works with three AA batteries.
When playing around with children and pets, it’s worth changing traditional candles for the LED variety. LED candles often work on a timer, so that they burn for six hours, switch themselves off and come on again at the same time the following day, so they are quite trouble-free things. Check out our selection on the ‘Decorative lights’ pages.
A night light increases safety for people moving around at night, and is often a great help for children who are scared of the dark. Our selection of night lights has models that operate with both motion detectors and dusk switches, and are equipped with a USB port. This can be used to conveniently charge, say, a mobile phone during the night. Night lights can be found under ‘Electrical accessories’ on our website.
