Instead of recessed lighting, you can choose an LED light strip above the cupboards, which will produce even indirect light off the walls and ceiling. If there are no upper cupboards, install downlights on the ceiling above the work surfaces and in front of the appliances and cupboards.
Cooking is easier and safe if the work surfaces are illuminated with direct light from above. Avoid spotlike light, reflective glare and the creation of shadows. Take safety regulations into account, particularly close to taps.
Illuminating worktops is best done using extendable LED strips installed on the lower surfaces of cupboards. You get a finished look if you put a light strip inside an aluminium profile. When light is distributed evenly over the whole surface, no distracting shadows are created and the light is sufficiently powerful.
A luminaire may only be installed beneath a drying cabinet, if it is drip- or splashproof. If there is an uncovered electric socket above the surface of the washstand, it must be at a height of at least 50 cm.
Plafonds are also a good source of general lighting. If general kitchen lighting is only based on a ceiling-mounted luminaire located in the middle of the room, pay attention to the direction of light: in the kitchen, you should not have just one light directed at a work surface from behind your back. When working, light should come from both behind and in front in order to avoid distracting shadows.
