What makes Airam Airam?

The year 2021 is of particular importance to Airam, as the family business celebrates its 100th anniversary in December. Our centuries-long journey has been an eventful one, from our origins in repairing lamps to our present status as one of the leading lighting companies in the Nordic countries. That’s something to be proud of. But how have we got here?

For Airam, the definition of good lighting has always been that it must make everyday life better. As a Finnish company, we have shared in the daily lives, hopes, sorrows and joys of the country. That is why we have always offered – and will continue to offer – just the right kind of lamps in the right place. Not just visionary interior lamps, but genuine, easy-to-use light that shows daily life in all its shades.

Towards the light - together

Towards the light - together

It has always been important for Airam to be close to customers, and to know what life and work are like. That’s the only way we can know how to illuminate it.

Since the 1960s, we have been offering advisory services and training to give our customers the best possible light, as well as publishing books and guides.

The will and know-how to provide great service, to see our customers’ lives and challenges in a common light. This makes Airam a genuine, Nordic lighting company.

The Nordic light

The Nordic light

Finns have come into the world and lived in Airam’s light for more than four generations. We have grown into the Nordic way of life, which is why Airam is such a familiar and accessible family business. The light of the whole nation, ready to conquer the world.

And what about that name, Airam? Could it be the founder’s wife’s name spelled backwards? Or could it have been a slip of the tongue by someone during the company’s formative moments? The exact reason for the choice of name may be lost in the mists of time, but Airam remains part of the success story of Nordic industry.

A Nordic classic

A Nordic classic

In 1959, renowned Finnish designer Tapio Wirkkala and Airam created a lighting classic that continues to shine.

The Wir lamp combined timeless design and good light provided by opal glass. With its simplified lighting cord, the lamp was fresh and radical. It was awarded the main prize at the prestigious XII Triennial exhibition in Milan in 1960.

The Wir lamp remains an icon of Nordic lighting. Airam continues to adhere to the same principle of sleek design and quality light today.
