Additional light for house plants and seedlings

Additional light for house plants and seedlings

During the dark season between October and February, all living house plants benefit from additional light. Gardening enthusiasts then again begin cultivating seedlings in late winter, by putting the first seeds into soil. Indoor seedlings need additional light, at least until the end of March.

During the dark season, all living house plants benefit from additional light. When choosing house plants, it is first worth checking whether the sun shines on the place where they will be located, or is there only a little light. In Finland, there is not enough natural light in winter. For house plants, there is a need for additional light from October to February. With insufficient light, buds can drop off and blossoming can be brought to a standstill. Inadequate light is manifested in yellowing leaves, among other things. A plant in poor condition is also more at the mercy of pests and diseases.

Additional light for seedling cultivation

Caring for plants requires effort. Summer flower seeds sown before March need extra light. Gardening enthusiasts awake from their winter slumber as early as January: it is once again time to put the first seeds into soil and to begin cultivating seedlings indoors. Some seeds germinate in the dark under soil, and some in the light on the surface of the soil. Immediately after germination, however, almost all urgently require extra light for strong growth.

If summer flower seedlings that have germinated well become too tall and thin, the reason is usually lack of light. Incandescent bulbs or halogens are unsuitable as plant lamps, because they produce too much heat. For indoor gardeners, we recommend energy-saving or LED plant lamps, because they consume little energy and produce only very little additional heat. The most fantastic benefit of the lamps is the plant light spectrum, which has been adapted to be optimal for plants. The spectrum contains many red and blue wavelengths, and only a few yellow wavelengths, which plants cannot benefit from.

No wasted heat

When illuminating house plants at home, the correct distance to the plant is important: the heat of a normal lamp positioned too near may damage the leaves of the plant. For that reason, choose for your plants energy-saving LED lighting which hardly heats at all, and position it close to the plant so that the plant will get full benefit from it.

Airam’s Fiora luminaire contains an LED plant bulb with light that is pleasant on the eye. Thanks to its long cord (3 m), you can bring the light fitting close to the plant.  Finnish houses usually have an electric socket close to the window. The long cord and Euro socket together enable the use of the Fiora luminaire as window lighting.

Local food from your own kitchen

Home-grown food always tastes better. The home gardener will also always get something to eat that is fresh and ethically produced. Most of us, however, buy our fresh herbs from the shop. They are always freely available.

The problem, however, is to keep them fresh and vital at home. Airam’s Herby LED desk luminaire can accommodate three small pots of herbs. Using the on-off switch, the plant luminaire can be conveniently converted into a cool 4,000 K light source.
